Did you know I had a speech impediment?

Until I was in about the 4th grade, I had a speech impediment. It was a lisp, and I had a very odd intonation, which made me sound like I was speaking “baby talk” all the time.

I wasn’t.

I honestly couldn’t get myself to sound the way I knew I ought to. It was terribly frustrating, and it made me not want to speak at all because my mother’s family would constantly torment me about it. They’d pick on me, mock me, and make fun of me every time I opened my mouth.

This was bad for several reasons. The worst of which is the fact I am a 95% auditory learner, so, for me to learn how to read well, I really needed to read aloud. As a consequence, I didn’t read well until I was in about the 5th grade because I refused to speak much due to the way I sounded when spoke.

My saving grace were my elementary school teachers. My second grade teacher realized my issue, which was contributing to my shyness at speaking to people and my low self esteem. She insisted that I go into speech therapy classes. It took 2 years for me to get a handle on speech impediment.

Thanks to my 5th grade teacher, I was able to catch up on my reading and writing skills.

Think about it.

If I hadn’t had attentive teachers who realized my issues and insisted on getting me the help I needed, I wouldn’t be able read well, let alone write, and speaking in public would be an unheard of skill for me.

As it stands, I was captain of my debate team in high school, and, after that, I’ve done several things that I feel qualify as public speaking events of one kind or another.

Can you imagine me not being able to read well, write well, or speak well?

People who think teachers have an easy job or under appreciate what educators do need to really consider what the smallest of details the teachers catch mean for their children. My mother’s family thought I was acting out and being a disruptive child looking for attention whenever my lisp popped up.

My teachers listened to what I was trying to tell them, and they helped me when no one else would or could.

Appreciate your teachers. Do it every day.

So are you a fan of Jaime Murray? What about Bering and Wells? I love your Swan Queen fics and I think you'd write awesome fics for them too. :)

I know of her, but I don’t know much about her work. I’ve never watched more than a few minutes of Warehouse 13. I could never get into it.

I personnally think that brown eyes are gorgeous, because they often are really warm. But I agree that people remark blue or green eyes more often than other colors. I have greyish eyes, and generally, after two or three months hanging out with me, people are like : "But... you don't have brown eyes?!". Just all of this to say that brown eyes shouldn't be underestimated.

My mother’s side of the family has grey eyes. Why the DMV marks that as hazel, I’ll never understand.

I appreciate what you’re saying here, and I’m sorry I’m a little ranty on it today. It seems like an absurdly silly thing to obsess over, doesn’t it?

However, songs about blue eyes and green eyes are out there in spades. Just once, I’d like hear someone tell me about how intriguing, amazing, and unique brown eyes are.

It’s like being a brunette. People under appreciate the aesthetic quality of brunette just like they do people with brown eyes. At least, they do in our culture.

Not really. I’m going to watch the new Star Trek movie again, and I’m going with a fellow Trekkie this time. Short of that and a shopping trip for a new dress (and probably shoes), that’s it.

Yeah, yeah… I KNOW it’s not her EYE color…. but it’s TUMBLR People!!! :)))

Though I am impressed with the photoshopping skills here, I am very angry that her eyes were changed from brown to blue. Purple I’d get, but blue makes me angry because Lana has beautiful brown eyes, and, in a media dominated by blue eyed/green eyed women, I’ve come to really appreciate someone who, like me, has brown eyes, and it’s even nicer to see that people appreciate her brown eyes.

I realize it’s a small thing, but it’s something that matters to me, so I wanted to say something because, you know, it’s tumblr, and I’m sure you guys won’t get too angry at me for being disheartened at someone changing Lana’s eye color to blue when it is so very difficult to find someone in the media that is loved, people find attractive, is in the media mainstream, and has brown eyes that people pay as much attention to as everyone seems to Lana’s.

This for me is right up there with people photoshopping out her scar. She is gorgeous exactly the way she is.

I’m so over my brown eyes, but that’s why I love Lana- because she has brown eyes and is so beautiful!! The photoshopping skills though, awesome.

See? That’s exactly my point. No one waxes poetic these days about brown eyed beauties. It’s been out of vogue for quite a while. It’s just… I don’t know… it’s nice to see someone out there that I can relate to that people actually find attractive, and her eyes are, to me, a big part of that, her scar, too.

I cannot imagine taking away her imperfections or changing her coloring. Why? She’s attractive on her own merits, and, for a change of pace, it’s nice to see a woman of color as the one most people fangirl over.

I perfectly understand Your point of view :) Believe me, please. I wouldn’t even dare to suggest that Lana’s brown eyes are even in smallest of ways “imprefect”…. Really :) We are talkig here about Lana Parilla - she is perfect just the way she is.

This blue-eye idea it’s just simply another exercise in my lessons in photo editing. So that’s why I’m going to post another… well - post - and add two more photos of brown Lana’s eyes. One Original Brown nad second one little lighted :) Best Regards to You All…

I just don’t. I allocate x number of hours a week to television watching, and, outside of that, I just don’t watch tv.

I mean, there are days when I flip on the tube just have background noise while I’m doing something else, but, as far as actively watching shows, I do one a season. It’s all I have time for.

Speaking of the Lana eye thing, do you think OUAT purposely makes Lana's skin whiter with the way they color the show? Cause I know she has paler skintone than stereotypical (using that word carefully here...) Latinas but she still has olive skintone. But when I watch OUAT, her skin looks really really white and all my friends who I got into watching OUAT think she's white until I tell him no.

No, I don’t, and I say that from experience. In pictures and videos I often look a lot whiter than I actually am. I think it’s the olive skin tone. If we’re not tanned, which she isn’t right now, then we pale out on film for some reason.

I do think, however, that they feature her scar in an oddly prominent manner.

Oh, that thing I reblogged where someone had changed her eye color from brown to blue.

It’s a thing with me, the fact Lana has brown eyes and the fact people think it’s sexy. It’s just not the industry standard in Hollywood for the ‘attractive people’ to have eyes like hers, and, since I also have brown eyes, it’s nice to see someone with brown eyes considered mainstream attractive, you know?

So it irks me when people change her eyes to blue.

What drew you into OUAT? When did you become obsessed with it? When did you start shipping Swan Queen? Lots of questions to distract you! :D

My girlfriend was watching it, and she kept telling me I should give it a try. I only watch one show per season, and, since my other show I really watch comes on during the summer season, I decided to give in and watch OUaT.

As usual, my gf was right. I bought the S1 box set and marathoned it (more or less). I was completely drawn in by the intricate and well weaved story and the well developed character sets, but the most complicated character is what kept me there.

I haven’t seen a character like her in a long time, and I don’t mean her looks. I mean the depth and breadth of her character and what both the actress and writers bring to her. She’s just amazingly well done, and I keep watching the show for her.

I shipped Swan Queen the first time I saw the two on screen. It was insta-chemistry.
